Daniel was tragically killed protecting fellow soldiers from an ambush in Iraq.

Daniel was a Rifleman , of 10 Platoon, C Company, Second Battalion The Rifles, his patrol was
ambushed by two gunmen.

He came under small arms fire attack as he provided protection for the patrol vehicles, and
sustained "very serious injuries" from which he later died in hospital.

Rifleman Coffey was the first soldier of the Rifles to be killed in action. His death represents a
tragic loss to all Riflemen in the Second Battalion.

His sense of humour, his skill as a Rifleman and his enthusiasm for soldiering on operations in Iraq
were clearly evident to all around him.

The fact that he volunteered to return to Iraq for a second tour of duty only two months after
having completed a seven-month tour with his previous regiment - the Devon and Dorset Light Infantry
- is a humbling testament to his dedication and his selfless commitment to the service to his
country.

He will be very sadly missed.

OUR LOST FRIEND

A FRIEND LIKE DANIEL IS HARD TO FIND, HE WOULD WATCH YOUR BACK , KEEP ONE STEP BEHIND, HELP TO PICK YOU UP WHEN YOU WERE DOWN, HE TRUELY WAS THE BEST MATE FROM MILES AROUND.

BEANY AND TODDY, WHAT A TEAM, BUT NOW THATS GONE ITS ALL A DREAM, LIKE DANIELS DREAMS OF FIGHTING FOR ARMY, COUNTRY AND QUEEN.

THE LOSS WE FEEL WE CANNOT EXPLAIN, A SENSLESS WASTE, A LIFE DOWN THE DRAIN.

WE ARE ALL SO PROUD OF YOU DANIEL, BUT THEY SAY THAT PRIDE COMES BEFORE A FALL, HOW RIGHT THEY WERE, NOW WHAT HAVE WE LEFT, APART FROM THE MEMORIES, NOTHING, NOTHING AT ALL.

YOU MAYBE GONE BUT YOUR MEMORIES IN ALL OF US, YOUR FAMILY, YOUR FRIENDS WILL FOREVER LIVE ON.

YOUR CHEEKY SMILE, YOUR HAPPY FACE, THE DREAMS YOU HELD NOW REPLACED, BY OUR SADNESS OF KNOWING, THERE ARE NO MORE TOMORROWS.

ALL THAT WE CAN HOPE IS THAT YOU HAVE MOVED ON, ONTO A HAPPIER PLACE. A PLACE WHERE THERE IS NO FIGHTING, NO WAR, SO THAT YOU WILL ALWAYS BE AROUND TO WALK BACK THROUGH THE FRONT DOOR. TO CALL YOUR MATES, TO GO FOR A DRINK NOT A CARE IN THE WORLD, NO NEED TO THINK.

BUT FOR NOW DANIEL THIS IS GOODBYE, ITS TIME TO SPREAD YOUR WINGS TO LEARN HOW TO FLY, TO LOOK DOWN ON US FROM THE HEAVENS ABOVE,
TO YOU MATE, WE SEND, EACH AND EVERYONE OF US ALL OUR LOVE.

A TRIBUTE TO OUR FRIEND RIFLEMAN DANIEL LEE COFFEY GOODNIGHT AND SWEETDREAMS XXXX

The young dead soldiers do not speak.
Nevertheless, they are heard in the still houses:
who has not heard them?
They have a silence that speaks for them at night
and when the clock counts.
They say: We were young. We have died.
Remember us.
They say: We have done what we could
but until it is finished it is not done.
They say: We have given our lives but until it is finished
no one can know what our lives gave.
They say: Our deaths are not ours: they are yours,
they will mean what you make them.
They say: Whether our lives and our deaths were for
peace and a new hope or for nothing we cannot say,
it is you who must say this.
We leave you our deaths. Give them their meaning.
We were young, they say. We have died; remember us.

For Those Who Mourn, And Those Who Wait.

As this year draws closer to its end and
Passes through Christmas and New Year then is no more
We look back and remember those
Who last year and the year before
Were here

As the lights, and Carols and all the trappings
Surround us once again and those
We love are far away this Christmas
We think of them and those back home
And pray

Those who mourn - whose son or daughter’s name adorns a stone
Can only think of Christmases gone by
We who look on and weep for them
Can only say, ‘There, but for the Grace of God, go I’
And tell them:

You are not alone, nor forgotten, and -
Though your child’s name was carved with pride in that cold stone
Their names were written also in our hearts
And yours: your bleeding, battered hearts which beat for them
Will, as long as you’re alive
Remember them with love and pride

For what is a life that was loved but now gone?
A hundred-thousand memories: a million tears, which now though sad
Were once - back then - happy, too, when you laughed together
The memories, the tears both poignant and glad
Are there for you to keep the while your grieving heart beats
And - for as long as your heart beats - they will never die.

Much love always,
Julie

A true hero

EVERY TEAR YOU SHED
I SILENTLY WIPE AWAY
I WISH I COULD BE WITH YOU
BUT I WASN`T MEANT TO STAY

IF ONLY I COULD HOLD YOU
AND SHOW YOU I AM STILL HERE
IF ONLY I COULD EASE YOUR PAIN
AND ERASE ALL OF YOUR FEAR

I HATE TO SEE YOU CRYING
I HATE TO SEE YOU SAD
WHERE I AM IS A BETTER PLACE
IT`S REALLY NOT THAT BAD

I AM YOUR STRENGTH WHEN LIVE SEEMS FUTILE
YOU`RE ANGEL IN THE SKY
I DIDN`T WANT TO LEAVE YOU
DIDN`T WANT TO MAKE YOU CRY

I AM WITH EVERY SECOND
EVERY HOUR OF THE DAY
AND WHENEVER YOU NEED DIRECTION
I WILL GUIDE YOU ON YOUR WAY

YOU NEVER ONCE LET ME DOWN
AND YOU ALWAYS SAW ME THROUGH
YOU STILL HAVE SO MUCH LOVE TO GIVE
AND TRULY I LOVE YOU

YOU WILL NEVER BE ALONE
SO SURROND YOURSELF WITH LOVE
AND TAKE COMFORT IN THE FACT
I`M WATCHING FROM ABOVE

We will be thinking of you and your family Daniel. Sending you all our love x x x x x x x

Hi David, and all Dan's family.
Hope you like the photo of the flag with Dan's name under it, my hubby did it for me at the weekend on the beach at Abergele.
I have written a poem for mums who've lost their lads in Iraq and Afghanistan, and have posted it below specially for Sam - hope you like it, sweetheart.
My love to all,
God bless,
Julie

Your eyes are filled with tears
Your heart is filled with pain
There's nothing that you wouldn't do
To see your son again

Your arms ache with longing
You want to hold him near
Your mind is filled with memories
You hold them oh so dear

He was your son! Your pride and joy
You loved him like no other
He loved you too - so very much!
His lovely, loving mother

The days just seem to drag now -
It's so long since you heard him laugh...
And yet the time has gone so fast!
You wish you could turn it back

Back to the time before he was gone
Before your world fell apart
Before that day when time stood still
And broke your mother's heart

You feel so numb
Yet you feel such pain!
How can this be true?
There seems no shelter from the rain
The sun just can't break through

There's nothing I can do for you
And no words I can say
I can only send my love
And pray for you each day

Pray that God will help you walk
This path you didn't choose
Pray that He would pick you up
When you're feeling battered and bruised

I pray that He will help you
Be comfort in your sorrow
And give you strength to carry on
And face each new tomorrow

My mothers heart just aches for you
I wish I could make it better
I know I cannot do that
So I send you love in this letter

May memories of your darling son
Bring you happiness, laughter and joy
Always remember - you are his mum
And he was your darling boy.

Much love and respect,
God bless,
Julie

Mum Of A Soldier (Friend of Dan's Gran'dad) October 24, 2007

There is discipline in A Soldier
you can see it when he walks,
There is honor in A Soldier
you hear it when he talks.
There is courage in A Soldier
you can see it in his eyes,
There is loyalty in A Soldier
that he will not compromise.
There is something in A Soldier
that makes him stand apart,
There is strength in A Soldier
that beats from his heart.
A Soldier isn't a title any man
can be hired to do,
A Soldier is the soul of that man
buried deep inside of you.
A Soldier's job isn't finished after
an 8 hour day or a 40 hour week,
A Soldier is always A Soldier
even while he sleeps.
A Soldier serves his country first
and his life is left behind,
A Soldier has to sacrifice what
comes first in a civilian's mind.
If you are civilian -
I am saying this to you.....
next time you see A Soldier
remember what they do.
A Soldier is the reason our land
is 'Home of the free',
A Soldier is the one that is brave
protecting you and me.
If you are A Soldier -
I am saying this to you.....
Thank God for EVERY SOLDIER
Thank God for what YOU do!
