Daniel was tragically killed protecting fellow soldiers from an ambush in Iraq.

Daniel was a Rifleman , of 10 Platoon, C Company, Second Battalion The Rifles, his patrol was
ambushed by two gunmen.

He came under small arms fire attack as he provided protection for the patrol vehicles, and
sustained "very serious injuries" from which he later died in hospital.

Rifleman Coffey was the first soldier of the Rifles to be killed in action. His death represents a
tragic loss to all Riflemen in the Second Battalion.

His sense of humour, his skill as a Rifleman and his enthusiasm for soldiering on operations in Iraq
were clearly evident to all around him.

The fact that he volunteered to return to Iraq for a second tour of duty only two months after
having completed a seven-month tour with his previous regiment - the Devon and Dorset Light Infantry
- is a humbling testament to his dedication and his selfless commitment to the service to his
country.

He will be very sadly missed.

Always

Always

As the sun starts to rise,
I'm with you
When you hear a bird sing,
I'm there
For each raindrop that falls,
think of me
And the love that we'll
always share

In the rush of the wind
feel my touch
In the quiet of night
hear my voice
If you start to stumble
take my hand
And know that it was
my choice

When tears start to fall feel
my comfort
If you feel low share
my pride
Don't ever think that you've
lost me
For I will always be there
by your side

Respect and condolences

Whatever anyone thinks about this conflict - there is no disputing the bravery of our servicemen and women. Particularly the likes of Daniel who volunteered for a second tour of duty.

Respect to you Daniel and God rest your soul.
