Daniel was tragically killed protecting fellow soldiers from an ambush in Iraq.

Daniel was a Rifleman , of 10 Platoon, C Company, Second Battalion The Rifles, his patrol was
ambushed by two gunmen.

He came under small arms fire attack as he provided protection for the patrol vehicles, and
sustained "very serious injuries" from which he later died in hospital.

Rifleman Coffey was the first soldier of the Rifles to be killed in action. His death represents a
tragic loss to all Riflemen in the Second Battalion.

His sense of humour, his skill as a Rifleman and his enthusiasm for soldiering on operations in Iraq
were clearly evident to all around him.

The fact that he volunteered to return to Iraq for a second tour of duty only two months after
having completed a seven-month tour with his previous regiment - the Devon and Dorset Light Infantry
- is a humbling testament to his dedication and his selfless commitment to the service to his
country.

He will be very sadly missed.

Letter from Heaven

When tomorrow starts without me, and I'm not there to see;
If the sun should rise and find your eyes all filled with tears for me;
I wish so much you wouldn't cry the way you did today,
while thinking of the many things we didn't get to say.
I know how much you love me, as much as I love you,
and each time you think of me I know you'll miss me too;
But when tomorrow starts without me, please try to understand,
that an angel came and called my name and took me by the hand,
and said my place was ready in heaven far above,
and that I'd have to leave behind all those I dearly love.
But as I turned to walk away, a tear fell from my eye,
for all life, I'd always thought I didn't want to die.
I had so much to live for and so much yet to do,
it seemed almost impossible that I was leaving you.
I thought of all the yesterdays, the good ones and the bad,
I thought of all the love we shared and all the fun we had.
If I could relive yesterday, I thought, just for awhile,
I'd say goodbye and kiss you and maybe see you smile.
But then I fully realized that this could never be,
for emptiness and memories would take the place of me.
And when I thought of worldly things that I'd miss come tomorrow,
I thought of you, and when I did, my heart was filled with sorrow.
But when I walked through heaven's gates, I felt so much at home.
When God looked down and smiled at me, from His great golden throne,
He said,

such a waste

wot a waste of another young life and i offer my deepest sympathy to the whole family. Nothing will ever bring Daniel back but he will stay in alot of peoples minds forever, and was doing a great job in working for his country which he must of loved. It takes a very special person to do that and to go into a country where there is alot of conflict. My son couldnt do it and he left the light infantry because he was afraid of having to hurt somebody (as he put it) he wanted to live life a bit and rejoin in a couple of years time when he felt more mature. He was only 18, but 6 months later he was killed by a drink driver, and that was 11 months ago. my heartfelt sympathys go out to all Daniels family and friends. R.I.P. Dawn x
